Modernizing CMDB with a Network Source of Truth

A utility services holding company faced significant challenges managing their network and IT infrastructure due to a disorganized Configuration Management Database (CMDB). With outdated and inconsistent records—such as 10 different entries for a single IP router—the company lacked the data integrity needed to support IT operations and service workflows effectively.

The Problem

The CMDB’s inaccuracies disrupted IT operations, made correlating configuration items (CIs) difficult, and hindered efforts tracking and inventorying critical IT assets. The client required a reliable process to consolidate and standardize their network data while ensuring it seamlessly integrated into ServiceNow

The BlueAlly Solution

Our team implemented a multi-phase approach:

  • Network Discovery:
Using a custom-developed proprietary network discovery tool, we
conducted a thorough network scan to identify devices, interfaces,
IPs, DNS, MAC addresses, and more.
  • Data Integration:
The discovered data was imported into NetBox, establishing a
relational database to serve as the client’s authoritative Network
    Source of Truth.
  • CMDB Synchronization:
NetBox was integrated with ServiceNow to push accurate network
data into the CMDB, replacing outdated and inconsistent records.
